Abstract Yorkshire Landscape Painting – Quiet Divides Series

Abstract Yorkshire Landscape Painting – Quiet Divides Series

Moorland Memory is a contemporary abstract landscape painting inspired by Old Gang Smelt Mill near Richmond in North Yorkshire. Created using layered acrylic and mixed media on fine art paper, the work explores the relationship between industrial history and the surrounding moorland landscape.

Part of the Quiet Divides series, the painting sits between representation and abstraction—capturing a sense of place shaped by memory, atmosphere, and the gradual passage of time.

Inspiration & Concept

Moorland Memory draws directly from the landscape surrounding Old Gang Smelt Mill, where the remains of industrial structures sit quietly within open moorland. The location carries a distinct presence—where human intervention is still visible, yet increasingly absorbed back into the land.

At the centre of the composition, a cluster of dark geometric forms suggests the smelt mill buildings. These are not rendered in strict architectural detail but are simplified and partially abstracted, allowing them to emerge naturally from the landscape rather than dominate it.

The painting explores the tension between permanence and erosion—between what is built and what endures. It reflects a landscape where history is embedded in the ground itself, and where traces of human activity remain visible but subdued.

Technique & Process

The surface is developed through layered acrylic application combined with mixed media, creating depth and variation across the composition.

Expressive mark-making is used to establish the movement of the land, with sweeping gestures echoing the contours of the hills. These are balanced with more controlled passages where form and structure begin to emerge.

Areas of paint are selectively removed or reduced, allowing earlier layers to remain visible beneath the surface. This process builds a sense of accumulated time, reinforcing the idea that the landscape has evolved gradually rather than being constructed in a single moment.

Textural variation plays a key role, suggesting weathered rock, exposed soil, and vegetation shaped by long-term exposure to the elements.

Colour & Atmosphere

The colour palette reflects the shifting light and mineral character of the Yorkshire moors.

Deep iron reds and burnt earth tones reference the geology of the region and its industrial past, while cooler greys and blues recede into the distant hills and sky. This contrast creates both depth and atmosphere, guiding the viewer through the composition.

The balance between saturated foreground colour and more subdued distance follows the natural structure of the landscape, enhancing the sense of space and quiet expansiveness.

It sits particularly well in contemporary interiors, neutral-toned living areas, and spaces where natural materials and muted palettes are present. The painting rewards sustained viewing, revealing layered detail and subtle shifts in tone over time.

The Quiet Divides Series

Moorland Memory forms part of the Quiet Divides series—an ongoing body of work exploring subtle divisions within landscape. These divisions may be physical, such as land, structure, and space, or atmospheric, such as light, distance, and memory.

Each painting seeks to capture a moment of stillness within these boundaries, where contrast exists without conflict. The series reflects a sustained exploration of landscape as both a physical and emotional space.
