Held in Red began as an open-ended studio exploration rather than a direct response to an observed landscape. The initial idea was to examine how areas of structure and uncertainty might coexist within the same painting.
Geometric forms appear to emerge, overlap and partially dissolve. Some passages feel architectural and ordered, while others remain ambiguous. This balance reflects the way memories and experiences can retain a recognisable structure while changing through time.
The title refers both to the painting’s dominant colour and to the idea of something being contained, preserved or carried within.
The work was created through successive layers of acrylic on Fabriano 300gsm fine art paper.
Paint was built up and selectively scraped back, revealing earlier passages beneath the surface. Incised lines, textural variations and expressive marks interrupt the larger geometric forms, creating a sense of accumulated history.
Applications range from thicker, more tactile areas of paint to thinner atmospheric transitions. The completed paper work was mounted to an aluminium Dibond panel, providing a stable, rigid support while retaining the surface character of a painting made on paper.
Red provides the painting’s principal emotional and visual energy. It is balanced by charcoal blacks, atmospheric greys and restrained neutral passages, creating a low tonal structure with moments of contained intensity.
