Held Horizon is a contemporary abstract coastal landscape painting inspired by the Strait of Gibraltar and the Pillars of Hercules. The painting developed from Andrew’s memory of visiting the Cave of Hercules near Tangier with his mother more than three decades ago. Looking across the Strait of Gibraltar left a lasting impression—an experience of standing close to the meeting point of two continents, where geography, mythology and personal memory converge.
Rather than reproducing that location literally, Held Horizon distils the experience into its underlying elements: a distant horizon, layered atmospheric space and a sense of separation held in balance.
The horizon acts as more than a division between sea and sky. It becomes a threshold between the physical landscape and the memory of being there.
Held Horizon was developed through successive layers of acrylic paint, transparent veils, texture and gestural mark-making.
Earlier passages remain partially visible beneath later applications, creating a surface that feels accumulated rather than simply described. Areas of energetic movement are balanced by quieter expanses, allowing the composition to retain both visual tension and stillness.
The painting was created on Fabriano 300gsm cold-pressed fine art paper before being adhered to an aluminium Dibond panel. This provides a stable, rigid support while preserving the distinctive surface character of a work made on paper.
Cool blues evoke sea, distance and atmospheric light. These are set against deeper areas of charcoal and black, with restrained passages of red and earth colour introducing warmth, energy and memory.
Although the surface contains expressive marks and layered contrasts, the stable horizon gives the painting a contemplative quality. Its colours and spatial relationships reveal themselves gradually, rewarding sustained viewing as the surrounding light changes.
