Fracture Field I is a contemporary square abstract landscape painting exploring disruption, continuity and the persistence of structure.
A bold diagonal fracture cuts across layers of acrylic, spattered ink, circular traces and gestural marks. It divides the composition while also holding its opposing areas together, creating a balance between interruption and stability.
Part of Andrew Bowers’ ongoing Quiet Divides series, the work considers how fractured ground—and the memories embedded within it—can retain a profound sense of order and resilience.
Fracture Field I developed through a studio exploration of structure, fracture and surface memory rather than from one particular geographical location.
Andrew began by considering the traces found within earth, stone and weathered surfaces. Circular marks, layered textures and subtle fragments emerged gradually before being deliberately interrupted by the strong diagonal division.
The fracture does not simply separate the composition. It becomes the principal structure around which the other marks gather, reflecting how disruption and continuity can coexist within both landscape and memory.
The work combines acrylic and ink on 300gsm Arches cold-pressed fine art paper.
Washes, layered paint and spattered ink create varied textures across the surface. Circular traces and expressive gestures remain visible within the underlayers, while the decisive diagonal line cuts through the accumulated marks.
The cold-pressed paper contributes its own subtle texture, allowing washes to settle unevenly and giving the painted surface a tactile character.
The completed paper work was adhered to a 5cm-deep Jackson’s cradled wooden panel. Its natural wood sides have been left visible and finished with wax, making the panel an intentional part of the artwork’s presentation.
Warm neutrals, earth colours and deep blacks establish a restrained, grounded palette.
Subtle gold accents introduce moments of light and resilience without disturbing the composition’s quiet tension. The contrast between darker passages and lighter exposed areas reinforces the relationship between fracture and balance.
As light moves across the surface, the layered textures and variations within the paper become more apparent, revealing details that are less visible from a distance.
